The Conway Kiwanis Club surprised Conway golfer Summar Roachell on Wednesday with a proclamation, read by assistant to mayor Tab Townsell, declaring Wednesday "Summer Roachell Day" in Conway.
Roachell also had a surprise for the club.
She announced that she had committed to play golf for the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The announcement, to a hearty round of applause, came a day after she won her third straight 7A state girls golf championship and a week after she helped a U.S. team retain possession of the Junior Solheim Cup in a competition in Ireland.
Roachell said UA coaches Shauna Estes-Taylor and Mike Adams were a major factor in the decision. She has had a friendship with pro golfer Stacy Lewis, who serves as a volunteer assistant for the UA women’s team, for several years.
"They (the UA coaches) are the best around," she said. "They are there for all their players. They are not just there for them during the season. They are there for them after they finish playing. Shauna was in one of her player’s weddings a couple of weeks ago. She’s caddied for her players on tour. Mike has been with all his players throughout, still helps them today.
"That was a very important thing in choosing; that, even when I’m done with college, they would still be there for me.
"I’ve grown up as a Razorback fan and having the opportunity to play for the Razorbacks in my home state, I just couldn’t pass that up."
