The Log Cabin Democrat is inviting community members to participate again in its unique fundraiser for Faulkner County students.
Each year, Faulkner County residents and beyond contribute to the Community Christmas Card.
The card, a special section of names appearing in the Christmas Day edition of the Log Cabin, is a sign to Faulkner County students that their community cares for them.
In 2010, participants raised just under $23,400, surpassing donations gathered in 2009.
Every dollar raised was forwarded to area school counselors, who are entrusted to use the funds to "fill in the gaps" when a student appears to be in need.
"Every year, we sponsor Community Christmas Card because every year some of our young people will need help," said Rick Fahr, Log Cabin Democrat publisher. "A house may burn. A health issue may come out of nowhere. A parent may die. Whatever the reason, Faulkner County young people have a place to turn because of Community Christmas Card."
Counselors have used the fund in the past to buy glasses for a student, send a student to a dental appointment, and even assist a student’s family in keeping electricity on at their home.
The fund has afforded shoes, winter coats and summer clothing when seasons change and a student’s wardrobe did not.
For a donation of $1, participants will see their name or a name of a person of their choosing in the Dec. 25, Christmas edition of the Log Cabin Democrat.
Organizers are now accepting donations at the Log Cabin office located at 1058 Front St.
To donate by mail, send donations to Community Christmas Card, P.O. Box 969, Conway, Ark., 72033.
Donations may also be made online through PayPal at www.thecabin.net.
All donations will be gathered and distributed equally to area schools.
"The reason for this program is obvious, but it’s important to note that every donated dollar, dime and penny go to children in need. Every cent," said Fahr.
