A man accused in the hit-and-run death of a 12-year-old Wooster boy on Wednesday appeared in Faulkner County Circuit Court for the first time on Friday morning.

Michael Fowler, 27, of Springfield, was arrested shortly after authorities say a 1998 Dodge pickup he was driving struck Garrett Martin just outside of his home, killing the boy. Fowler allegedly fled the scene.

Fowler was appointed a public defender and was charged with negligent homicide, a class B felony; leaving the scene of a fatality accident, a class D felony; first offense DWI, a misdemeanor, and reckless driving, also a misdemeanor.

He is being held at the Faulkner County Detention Center on $250,000 secured bond.

A pretrial hearing was set for Oct. 4.
