It's a gumbo kind of weekend, folks. A little of this, a little of that. Hope you enjoy.

First, let me tell you about a new nonprofit organization. Blackbird Academy of Arts, a nonprofit arts academy, is located in the Salter shopping center on Monroe Street. Jennie McNulty is the executive director. Registration begins July 1, and classes will begin in late August.

The academy will offer dance, music, creative writing and visual arts for ages three through adult. Scholarships will be available for children who cannot afford the classes.

Watch the Log Cabin Democrat for more information on this new endeavor.

Something Brewing will open its second location at Pickles Gap Village by July 3. I'm told this is a for-sure opening date. They are opening in the restaurant area at the village. They will serve breakfast and lunch, with the same menu their customers have come to enjoy at the location on Front Street. The last I heard they were considering some new and different items as well. By the way, according to the Log Cabin Classifieds, they are hiring.

Construction on a new McDonald's is well under way on Dave Ward Drive near South German Lane. You have likely noticed a new brick structure in the area if you have driven by. My sources tell me the restaurant will open between Aug. 17 and Aug. 24.

Also, Jaime's is open at 625 Salem Road, Suite 1. Jaime Wilcox is the owner of this business, which offers take-and-bake dinners, gourmet foods, food baskets, desserts, etc.

A new, large consignment shop is open in the southwest part of Conway. Bargain Hunters Warehouse at 1238 McNutt Road opened April 18. Vicky Curran is the owner, and she works along with her brother, Ken Norman. Their parents, Dale and Ceceilia Norman, are also involved in the business, making it a family affair. The facility is more than 7,000 square feet, and Curran says she will consign almost anything.

"We've got a little bit of everything -- furniture, sporting goods, clothing, home decor -- you name it, we've probably got it."

The shop is open 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
