The Bible states in Proverbs 14:30, "A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones." When you resent God’s goodness in the lives of others while ignoring His goodness in your own life you can easily fall into envy. And that can make you feel rotten inside. So today, I want to share with you three tips that will help you overcome the rotten feeling of envy.
1. Be patient, your time is coming! Never allow the success of another person to eat you up on the inside. Envy often rears its ugly head the moment others are given the opportunities and other blessings, we believe should have been ours. Envy has a way of playing with our mind. It always over exaggerates the blessings God gives to others, while minimizing all of the things God has done for us! Often times, we have to remind ourselves that we already have much more than we deserve. The Bible says it this way in Psalms 106:1, "Praise the Lord! Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever." No matter what you’re currently going through in life, always remember you still have a reason to be thankful!
2. Avoid comparing yourself to others! Consider the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 10:12, "We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise." It is never a good idea to compare your life to the lives of others around you, because you are comparing apples to oranges. God has created all of us to be uniquely different from anyone else. Therefore, the best thing to do is determine how your life is measuring up to God’s standards. Your focus should always be to maximize your God given potential not to compete with someone else.
3. Make an extra effort to celebrate the success of others! I firmly believe that the reason some of us are not being blessed in the manner we would like is simply because we have not learned how to be truly happy for other people. The Bible makes it plain in Romans 12:15 that we should, "Rejoice with those who rejoice…" When you hear about someone being blessed send them your well wishes via email, text, or social media. A personal phone call of congratulations works wonders towards chasing away the green eyed monster known as envy.
Is the success of others eating you up on the inside? Does it make your blood boil knowing that it’s them being promoted and not you? Envy, when given the opportunity, will eat you alive! Don’t feed envy with your sarcasm. Refuse to empower envy through your fault finding. Simply let it go before it rots your bones!
