LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The National Weather Service says much of northern and central Arkansas could see major ice accumulations as a winter storm brings freezing rain to the state.

An ice storm warning is in effect until 4 p.m. Thursday for areas north and west of Little Rock. Forecasters say up to a half-inch of ice is possible, with heavier amounts likely in the Ozarks.

The weather service says the most significant icing is expected in the early afternoon, causing widespread power outages.

Temperatures were hovering around freezing at daylight Thursday, and forecasters say sleet will eventually transition to freezing rain in northern parts of the state.

A winter storm warning is in place in northwest Arkansas until 9 p.m. Thursday. Forecasters say freezing rain, sleet and thunderstorms are possible Thursday.
