Warriors’ Muzika gets academic award
Hendrix College men’s soccer senior Tresor Mukiza has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Division III Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America, on Tuesday.
The midfielder from Kigali, Rwanda started in 14 games and scored two goals and had two assists before suffering a season-ending injury. He helped the Warriors to a school-record 10 wins this season.
Mukiza has a 4.00 GPA in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and was one of six selected with a perfect GPA.
"Tresor is very deserving of this prestigious award," said Hendrix head coach Doug Mello. "He has always been diligent in his studies while being a major influence on our improved squad in the midfield. Tresor joins a bevy of Warrior players who have been honored for their exploits both on the pitch and in the classroom during recent years. We are proud of his accomplishments."
Mukiza joins former Warrior Duncan Keegan who earned Academic All-America First Team honors in 2011.
To be eligible for the Academic All-America Team, a student-athlete must be in his second year of competition at their current institution and have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, and had to be selected to their respective all-district first teams.
Robertson Swimmer of Week
Hendrix College junior Jo Claire Robertson has been named the Southern Athletic Association Women’s Swimmer of the Week.
She scored 61.5 points, helping the Warriors to a fourth place finish at the Tiger Invitational on Nov. 16-17. The Shreveport, La. native took second in the 100 backstroke with a season-best 1:02.19. She also swam a time of 2:16.56 in the 200 backstroke, placing fifth and was 14th with a 1:04.70 time in the 100 butterfly. Robertson was also part of the medley relay team that finished second in the 400, and fifth in the 200 in 1:56.84, .49 seconds off the school record.
Vilonia 7th graders win twice
Vilonia’s seventh-grade girls defeated Carl Stuart twice in basketball Tuesday.
In the A game, Vilonia defeated Carl Stuart 29-11. Kenna Beaty and Aaliyah Cash led the scoring for Vilonia with six points each. Alyssa Netherlain and Anna Kaye Kirk added four points. Grace Vanlandingham, Tori Wilbanks, Kaitlyn Weaver, and Alexis Burnham added two points. Callie Eary scored one point. Casey Ott led the scoring for Carl Stuart with five points, followed by Abraila Zachary with four points, and Marlee Scaife with two points.
Vilonia’s B team defeated Carl Stuart 25-4. Ashlee Andrews, Ally Swaim, and Hannah Millsap led the scoring for
Vilonia with four points each. Brynn Schuetter, Faith Johnson, Karli Thompson, Macy McKissack, Beth Franks, and Brittany
Shull had two points each. Ashlynn Koonce scored one point. Talyn Lawrence had two rebounds and two assists. Camelia Elliott and
Laura Tual had two points each for Carl Stuart.
