LITTLE ROCK – The University of Arkansas – Little Rock Trojans powered past the University of Central Arkansas Bears at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.
The Trojans hit home runs in the bottom of the fifth and seventh innings, scoring three unanswered runs for a 6-5 win over the Bears in the two teams’ first matchup of the season.
UALR’s Ryan Scott led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field, bringing the Trojans within one run.
Dalton Thomas followed Scott in the bottom of the seventh inning and launched a two-run home run to left field, giving UALR the lead for the first time since the bottom of the fourth inning.
UCA capitalized on a trio of first inning errors by the Trojans, scoring on an error by UALR second baseman Hayden Martin and a fielder’s choice.
The Bears held kept the Trojans from scoring until the bottom of the third when UALR’s Zach Baker had an RBI ground out to second base.
The Trojans’ took the lead in their next at bat on a two-RBI double down the left field line by Martin.
The Bears tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Logan Preston on a single through the infield.
Two batters later, UCA scored two runs on a double down the left field line by Justin McCarty, scoring Preston and Brandon Montalvo.
It didn’t take long for the Trojans to climb back when Scott hit the solo home run to center field.
Bears’ pitchers had trouble with Scott all game, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.
The time he got out was a well-struck ball to center field, but was caught near the warning track.
After a pair of outs, the Scott tripled to right field before Thomas homered to left field off UCA reliever Chris Durham.
The Bears had a couple scoring chances in the final two innings, but could never push across any runs.
The Trojan’s Cody Daylor picked up his first win of the season, while Durham got his first loss of the season.
Neither starter made it past the fifth inning.
The Bears travel to Lamar University for a three-game series against the Cardinals, starting Friday.
