SHERWOOD — Conway’s girls golf team took command early Tuesday. The Lady Cats’ Casey Ott took control late.
The Lady Cats combined for a 242 total to easily win the 7A Central title at the 7A state girls golf tournament at The Greens at North Hills. North Little Rock was the closest conference team at 261. 7A-West teams Rogers (254) and Bentonville (255) are the Lady Cats’ major challengers for the state title, which will be decided in Wednesday’s final round.
The first day of the 36-hole state tournament also counts as the conference championship.
Ott, a junior and the defending girls Overall champion, has not won the state title in her two years. She is the conference medalist and goes for the state championship Wednesday. Sydney Stiener and Whitney Hill also earned all-conference honors with their first-round scores.
Ott fired a 72 Tuesday to take a three-stroke lead over Hannah Bakalekus of North Little Rock and Kate Robertson of Bentonville. Lurking at 77 is familiar rival Brooke Matthews of Rogers.
Other Conway scores were: Stiener, 80; Whitney Hull, 90; Bailey Hawk, 91; and Jaclyn Walls, 114.
On a brilliant day with little humdity, a perfect day for golf, Ott did not start perfectly. She began with two straight bogeys. She finished with four birdies.
"I birdied the par-5, eighth hole and it turned my round around," she said. "I then birdied 11 and 12, so it was a good stretch that got my momentum going. I hit my drives really well but a lot of holes here, you can’t hit driver but I used my hybrids to put myself in good position."
She’s not fidgety with the first-day lead.
"People are chasing me; that’s good," she said. "I love the pressure."
At Memphis, the University of Central Arkansas finished third Tuesday at the Memphis Intercollegiate played at Colonial Country Club.
The Bears, who led after two rounds, shot rounds of 297-303-298 to finish at 898.
