At the Farris Center on Wednesday, the University of Central Arkansas' Jordan Howard was prolific. On the other side of the Southland Conference, in San Antonio, Texas, the UCA Sugar Bears were stingy.
Howard, a senior guard, scored a career high and UCA Division I-record 41 points and the Bears connected on 13 3-pointers for the second straight game to run past the Incarnate Word Cardinals, 92-76, in Southland Conference action in front of a crowd of 1,156.
In a 57-35 romp over Incarnate Word, the Sugar Bears held the Cardinals to the second lowest total during coach Sandra Rushing's six seasons and the 30th time to limit an opponent under 40.
The 35 equals the second-lowest total the Sugar Bears have held a Southland opponent to during their six seasons head coach Sandra Rushing, and is the 30th time to keep an opponent to 40 or less during her tenure.
Numbers: Howard was four of nine on 3-pointers and 15 of 17 at the foul line … The Bears (9-9) moved to 3-2 in the SLC … Howard led five players with multiple 3-pointers as UCA made double-digit 3s for the ninth time this season. The Bears are the top 3-point shooting team in the conference … UCA led by as much as 24 points in the opening half and held the Cardinals (5-9, 0-4) to 38 percent. … UCA defeated UIW for the first time in seven games.
Howard says: "I was feeling good and had a good warmup. Mentally, I was good. I knew this was a game we had to win Opening up the floor with a lot of motion has been good for us."
Coach Russ Pennell: “I told the guys in the locker room, winning a conference game is difficult. I don’t care where you’re playing it, who you’re playing against. I think the big thing we have to remember in sports is, momentum is a crazy thing. … “I thought we shared the ball really well,’ said Pennell. “I look here and we had 23 assists on 30 buckets, and that’s what you want."
Support; Howard had help from a lot of Bears, including 7-foot freshman center Hayden Koval, who had 15 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots. Junior Thatch Unruh added 11. Sophomore Aaron Weidenaar had a perfect shooting night, going 4 of 4 overall and 2 of 2 from beyond the arc for 10 points. Senior Mathieu Kamba, a career-high seven assists. Freshman DeAndre Jones, coming off a triple -double in the Bears’ win over Lamar added nine and eight assists.
Next: The Bears join the Sugar Bears in Thibodaux, La., in Saturday for a doubleheader against Nicholls.

Numbers: Kamry Orr scored a career-high 27 points and six steals.… After allowing 14 points in the first quarter, the Sugar Bears (12-4, 5-0) limited the Cardinals (3-12, 2-2) to 21 points over the final three quarters, improving on the nation’s second-ranked scoring defense – dropping their average from 48.9 points per game allowed to 48.0 . … It was the second 20-point game of the season for Orr, who had 21 points at Baylor on Nov. 14
Rushing: UCA coach Sandra Rushing was on the bench for the first time in two games after the death of her father. She had missed three of UCA's first four conference games.
Streaking: The Sugar Bears have won 22 straight against Southland teams, and are 23-1 against Southland teams away from the Farris Center over the last three seasons.
