Kaitlyn Goike’s two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Brianna Nunn and gave the Central Baptist College softball team a 3-2 win over William Woods in the first round of the American Midwest Conference softball tournament. CBC (33-17) saw their winning streak advance to 14 in a row by defeating the Owls (24-21) and staying in the winner’s bracket.
Kymberlie House started and earned the victory for CBC. The Mustangs had no home runs in the contest and beat Woods for the second time this season.
Neither team scored for the first three innings until the Mustangs unlocked to score in the fourth.
Allison Seats led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on a groundout and to third on a flyout before scoring on a two-out single by Hunter Clark to give CBC a 1-0 lead after four.
CBC would add another run in the fifth on back-to- back singles by Cali Lankford and Nunn, with Lankford scoring two batters later on a sac fly to left field by Goike to make it 2-0.
House would keep the Owls off the board before running into trouble in the seventh.
She would retire the first two batters of the inning before issuing a walk to pinch hitter Celeste Sermano.
She got to a 1-1 count on the next hitter, Lindy Wilson, before surrendering a game-
tying two-run home run to force the Mustangs to bat in the bottom half.
Nunn’s one-out double put her in scoring position and, after moving to third on Alyssa Estrada’s groundout, set the stage for Goike’s heroics.
Goike would lace a single into left field to send Nunn home with the winning run and keep the Mustangs winning streak alive.
House threw a complete game, allowing six hits and two runs with one walk to earn the victory.
