The Wampus Cat Sports Hall of Fame board will soon meet again, this time to formalize the voting list that will be sent to members of the Wampus Cat Booster Club.

To form that voting list, the board will look to our master list of nominees, then select a manageable number of names to send to the booster club.

We will induct a class of six each year. Six to match the number of legs on a Wampus Cat. The inaugural class will be inducted in May of 2019.

Booster club members will receive the voting list and a ballot this fall where they can select their top six choices.

Booster club votes will be tallied and used as the starting point for the board to finalize the class of inductees.

To begin the master list, we started with all the winners of Conway High’s two major annual awards.

The Frank E. Robins Award was first presented in 1953 to Bill Nutter. When this award was started, there were no varsity sports for girls, so it was simply for the Outstanding Senior Athlete.

CHS added sports for females in the 1970’s. Three times the Frank E. Robins Award was awarded to female athletes. In 1984 it was presented to Melissa Henderson, in 1987 to Julia Jiskra, and in 1991 to Nicole Stanko.

In 1994, the Ruth Doyle Award was created to honor the Outstanding Female Athlete. The inaugural winner was Dandra Thomas.

The most recent honorees for 2018 were Jordan Wicks and Holly Stewart.

We added some others, including several coaches, and the master list already has well over 100 names on it. But we are looking to add more.

In reality, anyone and everyone who ever played or coached at Conway High is eligible to be included on the master list. But we do not need to clog it up with scrubs like me.

So, if you have anyone you would like for us to add to the master list, please send an email with his or her name, plus any pertinent any info you might have on that person.

The hall of fame email address is There is a Facebook page, appropriately named Wampus Cat Sports Hall of Fame, where you can find that email address and get more information.

The induction ceremony will be very similar to the Hall of Honor Gala held annually by the Conway Public School Foundation, which is a first-class event.

Like the Foundation, the Hall of Fame’s banquet will be held at the high school cafeteria, which cleans up real nicely for an event like this.

So again, if you would like to vote this fall on the inaugural Class of 2019, you need to be a member of the Wampus Cat Booster Club.
