Dominant first half leads CBC to victory over Stephens
Outshooting their American Midwest Conference opponent 19-1 in the first half, Central Baptist College came away with a 3-1 lead at halftime.
Winning the overall shooting edge 22-6, CBC (2-7, 2-5 AMC) defeated Stephens (2-10, 1-5 AMC) today 4-1.
The Mustangs peppered the Stephens goal all day, outshooting the Stars 13-2 in attempts on goal.
Junior Marcela Bueno opened the scoring in the ninth minute when she got a through ball from junior Kady Johnson and knocked the ball in off the crossbar, giving the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead.
Twelve minutes later, Bueno would score again on a cross from freshman Adrianna Evans, her second assist on the season, making it 2-0.
Less than a minute later, the Stars responded with a goal of their own on a missed clearance that was put away from about four yards to cut the lead in half.
Evans would then net her first career goal in the 26th minute when Bueno hit her with a cross on the right side of the goal, giving the Mustangs a 3-1 lead at the break.
Stephens applied some pressure in the second half but in the 69th minute, its defense misplayed a pass that fell to freshman Makaela Henry and she banged home her first career goal, bringing the score to its final margin at 4-1.
Sophomore Sara Calzada made only one save on the day as the defense locked up the Stars for most of the contest.
Next up for the Mustangs is a trip on Saturday to Belleville, Illinois, for an AMC contest against the Lynx of Lindenwood-Belleville.
Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
