As the calendar has turned to October, I would make the argument that there is not greater time to be a sports fan than in the fall.
With October in full swing, the NFL, college and high school football seasons are underway with playoff implications starting to take shape.
The NFL season is still young with week six getting underway this week, but some division winners and playoff teams are taking shape as the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams are heading into the week at 5-0.
The Cincinnati Bengals are sitting atop the AFC North division, while the usual dominant Pittsburgh Steelers currently have an identical 2-2-1 record as the usual AFC North doormat Cleveland Browns.
The New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers currently have just one loss, while the Atlanta Falcons, who made the Super Bowl two years ago are 1-4.
After acquiring star defensive end/linebacker Khalil Mack prior to the season in a questionable trade, the Chicago Bears are sitting at 3-1 in the NFC North.
UCA Bear fans can cheer for former players cornerback Tre Smith, who is with the Chiefs, safety George Odum (Indianapolis Colts) and defensive end Jonathan Woodard (Miami Dolphins).
In college, Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson are sitting in position for the College Football Playoff, while No. 2 Georgia was dealt its first loss of the season on Saturday to No. 13 LSU.
Conference football is fun because lower ranked, or non-ranked teams can upset the higher ranked teams which will surely cause some movement in the Top 25.
At the FCS level, the UCA Bears are rolling, with just two losses, one being to Sam Houston State in Southland Conference play.
Though the team lost starting quarterback Breylin Smith and backup Kirk Baugh, UCA sits at 2-0 with redshirt freshman Luke Hales taking snaps.
Arkansas is not having a great season, but Razorback fans can take a little from last week’s loss to No. 1 Alabama, when it scored 31 points on the Tide.
In high school football, all five Faulkner teams are eyeing a spot in the playoffs with Conway currently sitting at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the 7A Central.
In the 5A West, Vilonia, Greenbrier and Morrilton are all tied at 2-2 and could be looking for a No. 3 seed out of the 5A West.
Greenbrier and Vilonia will meet up in the final regular season game and the Eagles are playing the Devil Dogs this week.
In 3A, Mayflower is currently tied with Atkins for second in the 4-3A. Those teams are playing each other this week to see who can take a step further.
In 2A, Conway Christian has looked dominant in 5-2A competition and is currently the only undefeated team through four 5-2A games.
But the excitement doesn’t stop at football, the Major League Baseball playoffs are going on right now.
The reigning World Series champion Houston Astros are battling baseball’s best regular season team are playing for the opportunity to play in the World Series.
In the National League, the Milwaukee Brewers are playing on fire as they are playing the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Again, it doesn’t stop there as basketball will soon start up.
Preseason NBA games are finishing up, while the regular season starts Tuesday.
And, the NHL has started its season.
NASCAR is currently in its Chase for the Cup playoff.
Soccer is currently underway and there are always boxing and mixed martial arts events going on.
October is definitely one of the more excited times for sports fans because there is something for every sports fan.
