After a couple of runner-up finishes in a couple of local travel basketball tournaments in Little Rock and Hot Springs, Mayflower’s first ever girls AAU team – Lady Blaze Select - will now be heading to the Prime Time National Tournament in July.

The summer select squad is set to compete against some of the best teams in the nation on July 24-28 in Dallas, Texas.

The team was selected back in February and have competed in eight select tournaments to date.

Although the newly formed year-round program focuses on development and structure rather than winning, the Lady Blaze 12U Girls have competed strong against more established teams from Faulkner County and beyond.

Top finishes include a second place finish in the Game Changer March Classic in Little Rock with a narrow one-point loss in the finals to AAO Flight coupled with a one-point loss at Hot Springs Invitational in April and a heartbreaking semi-final double-overtime loss to the Searcy Lady Grizzlies a few weeks back in Searcy.

The current group is comprised of girls from the Mayflower area who are just in their second season of competitive basketball and are between the ages of 10-12 years old. Upon completion of nationals, the team will participate in off season training and conditioning to prepare for the spring school season which will run from August until mid-November.

The program will be looking to expand next spring to offer teams for sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls along with a seventh and eighth grade boys team.

Parents who may be interested in participating in their off-season training program to prepare for school basketball or want more information about the program can contact coach Mark Rico by phone (210) 941-8051 or e-mail ladyblazeelitehoops@gmail.com.
