Two of the most promising 3 year olds in 2017 at Oaklawn are scheduled to meet again in the $120,000 Kelly’s Landing Overnight Stakes Saturday at Churchill Downs.
Uncontested and Petrov, 1-2, respectively, in the $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes - Oaklawn’s first of four major Kentucky Derby prep races - are among nine horses entered in the 7-furlong Kelly’s Landing.
Uncontested will be seeking his second stakes victory since the one-mile Smarty Jones, when he set race records for time (1:36.32) and margin (five and one-fourth lengths) in a wire-to-wire romp over a sloppy track.
Uncontested then finished sixth as the favorite in the $500,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) and fell off the Arkansas Derby trail with an eighth-place finish in the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2).
Uncontested opened his 2019 campaign with a front-running one-length victory in the $250,000 General George Stakes (G3) Feb. 16 at Laurel, narrowly missing a 7-furlong track record.
Now under the care of high-percentage trainer Tom Amoss, Uncontested will break from the rail Saturday under Miguel Mena and carry top weight of 123 pounds.
Following the Smarty Jones, Petrov finished second in the Southwest, fourth in the Rebel and ninth in the $1 million Arkansas Derby (G1) for co-owner/trainer Ron Moquett of Hot Springs.
Petrov, seeking his first career stakes victory, was an allowance winner at the 2018 Oaklawn meeting.
Petrov is scheduled to break from post seven under Jack Gilligan and carry 121 pounds.
Also entered in the Kelly’s Landing are multiple Oaklawn allowance winner Warrior’s Club - fourth in the Smarty Jones and 11th in the Southwest in 2017 for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas - and Control Stake, who made two starts this year in Hot Springs for trainer Greg Foley.
Control Stake finished second in the $100,000 King Cotton Stakes on Feb. 9 and fourth in the $150,000 Hot Springs Stakes on March 9.
Warrior’s Club is scheduled to be ridden by 2000 Oaklawn riding champion Jon Court.
Six-time Oaklawn riding champion Ricardo Santana Jr. is named on Control Stake.
Probable post time for the Kelly’s Landing, which goes as race 8, is 3:22 p.m. (Central).
Laughing Fox, winner of the inaugural $300,000 Oaklawn Invitational for 3 year olds May 4 at Oaklawn, worked 5 furlongs in 1:00.40 Monday at Churchill Downs for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, who has topped the standings 10 times in Hot Springs since 2007.
Laughing Fox is nominated to the $250,000 Iowa Derby on July 5 at Prairie Meadows.
Several Oaklawn-raced horses are entered in the $100,000 Chicago Handicap (G3) on Saturday at Arlington Park, including defending champion Hotshot Anna, who will be making her 2019 debut in the 7-furlong race.
Hotshot Anna, who has flourished on synthetic surfaces, is seeking her fifth consecutive victory.
She is the 5-2 program favorite.
Oaklawn stakes winner Sarah Sis and Oaklawn allowance winner Finley’sluckycharm won the Chicago Handicap in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
Oaklawn-raced Scotty’s Model is entered in the $100,000 Zadracarata Stakes Saturday at Woodbine.
Snapper Sinclair, runner-up in the $350,000 Essex Handicap on March 16 at Oaklawn, was an allowance winner Sunday at Churchill Downs for Asmussen.
