MANHATTAN, Kan. — Senior Gideon Pienaar shot a blistering 65 in the afternoon round Monday to push the University of Central Arkansas Bears into first place in the 2010 Jim Colbert Intercollegiate being played at Colbert Hills Golf Club.
Pienaar, from Pongola, South Africa, shot an opening round 72, then followed it up with a 7-under 65 to take over first place heading into Tuesday’s final round. Pienaar, at 137, has a five-shot lead on Kansas State’s Thomas Birdsey and Jack Watson, both at 142.
UCA senior Steven Lecuyer is tied for seventh after shooting 73-75 — 148. Senior Andrew Hopkins shot 82-72 — 154 and is tied for 19th with teammate and junior Josh Sims (74-80 — 154). Junior Chris Cooke shot 80-78 — 158 and is tied for 33nd. Playing as individuals, UCA’s Antonio Costa shot 78-70 — 148 and is tied for seventh, while Jad Sinclair shot 75-81 — 156 and is tied for 24th.
UCA has a five-stroke lead on second place UMKC (594), followed by Kansas State (594), Creighton (611), Drake and UC Riverside (612) and South Dakota State (618).
