The Hendrix College baseball team has selected juniors Clark Sims, Nathan Harr and Mark Vlaskamp to serve as team captains for the 2011 season.
Sims, a two-time All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference selection, will anchor second base for the Warriors this season. Last year, he led the team with 15 stolen bases, nine doubles and 101 assists. Sims also batted .336 with a .471 slugging percentage and only struck out eight times in 144 at bats.
This will be the second-straight season as team captain for Harr. He led the 2010 Warriors in runs scored (38), walks (21), total bases (64) and was tied for first in hits (46). Harr batted .338 and was 8-for-10 in stole bases. Harr will be manning third baseb for the Warriors in 2011 after spending his first two seasons in right field.
Vlaskamp, a 2010 All-SCAC selection as a utility player, will be looked upon again to fill many roles in 2011. He had a breakout season in 2010 when he hit a blistering .387 with a .468 on-base percentage. Vlaskamp was one of the Warriors’ most consistent offensive players in 2010 and only struck out nine times in 93 at bats.
The trio of juniors will lead a team that is just one year removed from the 2009 SCAC Conference Championship and eager to redeem themselves from a disappointing 2010 campaign in which the Warriors finish one game out of the playoffs.
Hendrix will open the year with a mid-week game against in-state rival and American Southwest Conference member University of the Ozarks on Feb. 1 in Clarksville, Ark. Hendrix returns to Warrior Field for its home-opening series against University of Dallas on Feb. 5 and 6.
