WACO, Texas — After opening the Baylor QTI Powers Invitational with a 4-1 win over Louisiana-Monroe in the morning, the University of Central Arkansas softball team followed up with a 1-0 victory over No. 23 Houston at Getterman Field on Friday afternoon.
The Bears (3-8) got a shutout pitching performance from sophomore Kelsie Armstrong and a solo home run from Kasey Britt to top the Cougars (10-3). The win marks the first over a ranked NCAA Division I team in UCA history.
Britt, a junior, led the top of the fourth off with a blast over the fence in right center field. She went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and seven total bases in the game.
UCA will continue the tournament today with a 10 a.m. game against Sam Houston State and a 3 p.m. contest with host Baylor.
Junior Cami Newsome struck out a career-high seven batters and allowed just three hits to lead the Bears to a 4-1 victory over Louisiana-Monroe Friday morning in the opening game of tournament.
Melissa Bryant hit a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the first to put UCA up 1-0. Lindsey Barsoum led the fifth off with a bunt single, stole second and scored on another Bryant home run, this time to left center field to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Nicole Beals reached on an error and later scored on a double by Shay Ristau to make the game 4-0.
Bryant led the Bears by going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in and two runs scored.
