The Hendrix College swimming team will kick off its season at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against Austin College at Bob Courtway Pool. On Saturday, the Warriors will travel to Shreveport, La., for a meet against Centenary and Austin, then return home for the Hendrix Classic and Hendrix Relays on Oct. 28 and 29, respectively.
The Warriors return eight members from the women’s squad and five from the men’s team. Head coach Jim Kelly, entering his 29th season, is hoping to overcome injuries and small numbers this year.
"Initially, our women looked great for the season," said Kelly, "but in the last month, our team resembles a MASH unit. We have had a number of injuries to key swimmers. Considering the types of injuries, you would think it is a contact sport. For both of our teams, Murphy’s Law has come into play.
"It is going to be a tough year (for the men)," Kelly said. "Some of our former swimmers are concentrating on their majors this year to get into grad school, while some others no longer have the passion for it. This is the smallest men’s team I have experienced at Hendrix, but we will survive."
Besides the opener, the Warriors are looking forward to the SCAC Southwest Shootout in Southlake, Texas on Nov. 18-19 and the Washington University Invitational in St. Louis on Jan. 13-14.
