A complete-game shutout by senior Ryan Angus sealed a Southland Conference sweep for the University of Central Arkansas Bears on Sunday afternoon at Bear Stadium.
Angus struck out eight, walked none and allowed just six hits as the Bears won 5-0 to improve to 16-17 overall and 10-8 in league play. UCA won its fifth consecutive conference game for the first time since moving to NCAA Division I in 2007.
The Bears broke open a pitchers’ duel between Angus and Nicholls starter Mike Wisecarver by scoring a run on a double by Jonathan Davis and an RBI triple by Ethan Harris. UCA put up another run in the seventh when Logan Moon greeted reliever Mike Suk with an RBI single to left on the first pitch he saw for a 2-0 lead.
Three more runs came across in the eighth as Harris added a two-run double and Bryan Willson had a sacrifice fly for the 5-0 lead.
Angus, a righthander from Carrollton, Texas, then worked around a Blake Bergerson single in the ninth to record his third victory, second complete game and second shutout of the season.
Davis, a sophomore from Camden, continued his hot hitting weekend, going 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored. For the series, Davis went 10 for 13 with seven runs scored, three RBI and four stolen bases. Harris was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and catcher Travis Snider went two for four.
No Nicholls player had more than one hit as Angus retired 17 consecutive batters at one point in the game.
UCA continues SLC play next weekend at Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.
