SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State pitchers struck out 11 batters Friday night in taking a 5-3 victory over the University of Central Arkansas Bears at Bobcat Ballpark.
TSU reliever Ross Goebel struck out the side in the ninth inning to secure the win and keep the Bears winless in seven tries in San Marcos.
The loss also broke UCA’s five-game Southland Conference winning streak, dropping the Bears to 10-9 in league play and 16-18 overall. Texas State improved to 21-16 and 9-10.
UCA took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning when Bryan Willson led off with a home run to and Blake Marchal knocked in another run with an infield single to make it 2-0. Jonathan Davis then reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Logan Moon for a 3-0 lead.
The Bobcats stormed back with four runs on four hits in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. UCA stranded runners in both the sixth and seventh innings before having its best chance in the eighth. The Bears got runners on second and third with no outs but Goebel came on and recorded three consecutive outs to get out of the jam and preserve the 5-3 lead.
The Bobcats had 10 hits, with Tyler Sibley, Nick Smelser and Garrett Mattlage getting two apiece. UCA collected six hits, with Moon going 2 for 4. UCA starter Jeffery Enloe (3-5) got the loss, going 6.1 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs and striking out five. Travis Ballew (7-3) picked up the win.
Game 2 of the series is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
