SHERMAN, Texas — Austin College ended Hendrix's softball season Sunday with a doubleheader split.
The Warriors (17-18, 7-9) needed to win both games to qualify for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament and started the day with a 4-2 victory. The host 'Roos (13-27, 7-9) earned the spot with a walkoff 5-4 win in the second game.
In the first game, Brittiny Casteen went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Tiffany Hubbard was 2-for-3 with a stolen base. Six different players had hits for the 'Roos.
Junior Ashley Halbert struck out six and allowed six hits, two runs and three walks for the win.
In game two, Halbert hit a solo home run over the fence in left center to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead in the first. Farquhar knocked in two runs with a base hit in the bottom of the first to put the 'Roos up.
Hendrix regained a lead in the third when senior left fielder led off with a base hit and Halbert doubled her in. Burr followed with a base hit, scoring Halbert to go up 3-2. Catcher Mallory Rossman doubled in Farquhar in the bottom of the frame to tie the game back up.
Halbert led off the fifth with her second home run of the game to put the Warriors up again. Farquhar tied it once again in the bottom of the fifth with base hit, scoring second baseman Jessica Baker.
In the top of the seventh in the second game, Morgan Fires led off with a double and moved to third on a wild pitch with no outs. Halbert drew a walk, then Paula Burr struck out. Trace Grinnell flied out to right fielder Briana Slawson, who threw out Fires at the plate to end the inning.
Slawson started the bottom of the seventh with a single and moved to second after a single. After a groundout moved Slawson to third, Heather Farquhar hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Slawson for the winning run.
Halbert went 3-for-3 with 10 total bases, three runs scored and three driven in.
Sunday marked the final games in the career of three Warrior seniors - Grinnell, Kaylen Stevenson and Casteen.
