With their backs to the wall, Central Baptist College's Lady Mustangs rebounded with gusto Saturday night, defeating Lee College of Tennessee, 7-2, to advance to the double-elimination championship round of the NAIA softball tournament at Gulf Shores, Ala.
Lee entered the game as the only unbeaten team in CBC's four-team pool. The Lady Mustangs' victory created a logjam with three teams (CBC, Reinhardt University and Lee) with 2-1 marks in the pool. The Lady Mustangs were declared champions of the pool because of the tiebreaker of total run differential.
CBC (52-6) lost to Reinhardt, 3-0, but defeated Morningside, 8-0, and Lee. Reinhardt lost to Lee, 2-0, but defeated CBC, 3-0, and Morningside, 9-0. Lee defeated Morningside, 8-0.
The Lady Mustangs, who entered the tournament ranked No. 4 in the nation, advance to Monday’s double-elimination championship bracket and will play Indiana Southeast at 10 a.m. Monday. The champions of the eight pools gained the championship bracket that will determine the national title.
Samantha Luther led an 11-hit CBC attack against Lee. She was 3 for 3 with two runs and three RBI. Christen Kirchner and Candice Brasher also had two hits.
Jessica Bock, who worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first without yielding a run, scattered eight hits and struck out six.
