FAYETTEVILLE — University of Central Arkansas’ Pep Angles shot an opening-round 78 on Thursday in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional at The Blessings Golf Club.

Angles, a sophomore from Barcelona, Spain, is tied for 52nd place with two rounds to play. Angles overcame a triple bogey on No. 6 with consecutive birdies on Nos. 8-9, just missing an eagle putt on the ninth. He had three more bogeys on the back nine but birdied No. 15 to finish at 6-over.

Angles, the Southland Conference Men’s Golfer of the Year, will tee off at 9:40 Friday morning, playing alongside Indiana’s Andrew Fogg and Alabama State’s Jose Rodriguez. Angles is the first UCA player to compete at an NCAA Regional since Steven Lecuyer in 2011.

The NCAA Fayetteville Regional is one of six regionals being held across the country that features the best teams and individuals in the nation.  There are 14 teams and five individuals competing at The Blessings. The low five teams from each of the six regionals, along with the low individual from each site not on those teams, will qualify for the finals, to be played at The Capital City Club, Crabapple Course in Atlanta, Ga., on May 28-June 2.
