LITTLE ROCK — Hendrix College cruised to a pair of straight-game volleyball victories to snap its nine-match skid Thursday afternoon.
The Warriors defeated Rust College 25-19, 25-17, 25-18 in the opener and then defeated host Philander Smith College 25-16, 25-14, 25-22 in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Clement tallied nine kills in 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage against Rust and freshman outside hitter Jordan Spennato added a career-best seven kills on 15 attempts. Spennato also fired a pair of aces. Freshman setter Zoe Calhoun added 14 assists, while junior setter Ashley Skinner recorded nine assists and five digs. Junior outside hitter Jennifer Youngblood led the way with 13 digs and sophomore right-side hitter Kristen Finch made two solo blocks.
Clement matched her first-game total with nine kills against Philander Smith. She posted zero errors on 15 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage. Youngblood was close behind with seven kills, while freshman outside hitter Katie Burchfield and sophomore outside hitter Katie Bates collected six kills apiece. Skinner led the way with 17 assists and racked up five aces. Calhoun added 14 assists and freshman Audrey Morrow made 10 digs.
Hendrix stretched its all-time record against Philander Smith to 21-0 and owns a 9-0 all-time mark against Rust. The Warriors now stand at 6-10 overall and will travel to Birmingham, Ala., on Oct. 2 and 3 to compete in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Central vs. East Cross Divisional, hosted by Birmingham-Southern College.
