Hendrix College freshman safety Caleb Shannon was named the Southern Athletic Association Football Defensive Player of the Week and freshman punter Spencer Smith was the Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Shannon recorded two interceptions, eight tackles and a pair of pass breakups in Saturday’s 30-17 win over Berry. Shannon, from The Woodlands, Texas, returned his first interception 13 yards to the Vikings’ 9, setting up the Warriors’ first touchdown of the game in the second quarter. His second interception came in the end zone during the third quarter, leading to a Hendrix touchdown on their ensuing drive.

Smith punted seven times for a 41.3 yard average and had five punts inside the 20 in the Warriors’ 30-17 win over Berry. The Houston, Texas native’s longest punt was 59 yards to the Vikings’ 18 that eventually resulted in a safety for the Hendrix defense. Smith also had three catches for 15 yards as a receiver.
