For its homecoming Saturday at Sherman, Texas, Austin College did some grinding in a 45-38 victory over Hendrix College.
The Roos (3-5) rushed for 344 yards and amassed 569 yards of offense, then held off a comeback by the Warriors (3-4) on coach Buck Buchanan’s return to his alma mater.
James Nwankpah rushed for 202 yards for the Roos, who took command of the game with 21 straight points after Dayton Winn gave Hendrix a 7-0 lead on 39-yard run.
Winn, who rushed for 92 yards on 16 carries and had another 114 in receptions, ran 45 yards for a touchdown, Spencer Smith pulled in a 25-yard TD pass from Tanner Frye and Steve Crenshaw booted a 33-yard field goal to pull the Warriors with 28-24 at halftime.
Andrew Klink booted a career-long 45-yard field goal to put AC in front, 31-24, with 13:07 left in the game. Nwankpah broke for a 54-yard TD run for a 38-24 lead with 10:39 left.
A 1-yard run by Winn drew the Warriors within 38-31 with 5:22 left.
A 39-yard TD reception by Travis McClinton after the Roos recovered an onside kick to give AC a 45-31 lead.
Frye passed 13 yards to Ethan Hoppe to again draw Hendrix within a touchdown with 1:37 left.
But the Roos recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.
Frye, making his secondd start in place of the injured Seth Peters, completed 33 of 47 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns. Smith caught nine passes for 113 yards.
Greenbrier’s Reid Cone had 13 tackles for the Warriors.
