Conway High’s campus will have a lot of attention this afternoon.
Conway is scheduled to host its 26th annual Wampus Cat Steak-Out today at John McConnell Stadium. Wampus Cat Arena is the host site for another event on the high school campus, Conway’s volleyball showcase headed by Conway High coach Laura Crow.
"This is a great thing for the community to come out and get to see kids from seventh grade on up," Conway athletic director Buzz Bolding said. "It’s a good time for everybody to get together. This is the last big thing before football season and all of our other sports start."
This marks the first Steak-Out for coach Clint Ashcraft. Seeing how what he has done in tonight’s event has built interest. According to Bolding, having a chance for the public to see the new synthetic turf field and the new offensive and defensive schemes that Ashcraft and his coaching staff have been installing since January should be a big draw-tool for spectators.
"Coach Ashcraft is bringing a lot of excitement," Bolding said. "People are gonna come, and it’ll be a big crowd, with lots of fun.
Bolding said the volleyball showcase was started four or five years ago by coach Laura Crow. In her seven years as the head coach of Conway’s volleyball program, Crow has solidified the Lady Cats as one of the state’s powerhouses.
"That is a big success," Bolding said, referring to the volleyball showcase. "It’s going to be just like in football where a lot of kids participate and the families get together and build relationships. That’s what you’ve got to have for a good athletic program."
A hamburger steak sandwich and dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. at John McConnell Stadium. The announcement of the fall sports student-athletes will start around 5, and the eighth grade will scrimmage around 5:30. The junior high and high school varsity teams will follow. It is expected that the Wampus Cats will take the field around 7:30. The public is invited to attend. The cost is $6 for ages 12 and up and $4 for ages 5-11. Tickets for the event can be purchased at the ticket gate.
The volleyball showcase is scheduled to run from 1-5 p.m., and the Lady Cats are set to take the court around 4:30.
