Faulkner County basketball teams opened regional tournament play Wednesday with mixed results.

At Magnet Cove, Heather Moix scored 19 points as the St. Joseph girls built a 28-10 halftime lead on the way to a 57-40 victory over Carlisle in the 2A East Regional.

The victory qualified the Lady Bulldogs (24-9) for next week’s state tournament at Cedar Ridge.

Moix added 11 rebounds for St. Joseph. Megan Briggler had 17 points and Rachel Briggler seven points and five assists. Courtney Briggler had six points and six rebounds.

Anna Mayor had six points and Jennifer Hegeman five assists.
The Lady Bulldogs will take on either Magnet Cove or Augusta in Friday’s semifinals.

“The girls played well and I am proud of the effort to qualify for state,” said St. Joseph coach Chris Kordsmeier. “But we want to keep advancing in the regional. We did a good job on defense and had a balanced offense.”

 Harding Academy’s girls eliminated Mayflower, 48-30. in the 2-3A regional at Bald Knob.

In the Class 1-3A regional at Stephens, Sparkman defeated Mount Vernon-Enola, 68-54 in boys action.

MV-Enola’s girls defeated Sparkman, 70-56, to move into Friday’s semifinals. The Lady Warhawks also qualified for the state tournament at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia.
