WYNNE — Not even an extra period was enough to decide the winner of Tuesday’s Conway-Horn Lake (Miss.) game in the first round of the Wynne Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament.
The Wampus Cats, though, got big shots when they needed them and held on for an 88-86 win in double overtime. With the victory, Conway (9-2) will take on Christian Brothers — which defeated Hughes 59-56 Tuesday — at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in second-round play.
Tim Boyd, who led the Cats with 24 points, hit the game-winning shot with 1.5 seconds left when he connected on a 10-foot jumper. Prior to that play and with Conway leading 86-83, Horn Lake drained a 3-pointer to tie the game. A third overtime wouldn’t be needed, though.
With the Cats trailing 64-63 with a couple seconds left in regulation, Xavier Clardy hit a free throw to force overtime. Both teams scored 11 points in the first overtime, prompting the second extra period.
Clardy finished the game with 21 points. Everett Reed added 12 points, while Garan Davis and Dominic Taylor had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
