GREENRIER – Separated by just a few miles, Greenbrier and Guy-Perkins rarely meet on a basketball court.
When the teams got together Thursday in the First Security Bank Battle at the Brier Classic, Greenbrier made sure it grabbed the upper hand in both boys and girls games. Greenbrier boys won by 67-57, and the Greenbrier girls dominated by 73-35.
The Greenbrier boys made extensive use of 3-point baskets to turn back the Thunderbirds from Guy. Greenbrier sank five 3-pointers in the second quarter to edge in front by 31-29 at the half. Tyler Simmons, Dustin Sims and Justin Sims all had 3-pointers for the Panthers. Guy stayed close with some 3s from Tim Campbell and Samuel Gonzalez.
The Tims brothers rallied Greenbrier in the third quarter after The Thunderbirds had gone in front briefly on a Gonzalez 3-pointer. Greenbrier scored six straight baskets to take a 42-32 advantage, and this margin held the rest of the game, despite more Guy 3-point shots from Campbell and Trey Owens.
Simmons, a senior in his first year with the Panthers, led all scorers with 13 points. Justin Sims had nine, Jordan Wilcox nine and Dustin Sims six. For the Thunderbirds, Campbell and Gonzales each scored 11, Owens had 8 and Jimmy Miller had 6.
Kory Westerman led the Greenbrier girls with 23 points. Kenzie Batterton addd 10, Brookly Freeling, seven, and Cailee Laslee and Catie Metcalf, six each.
