University of Central Arkansas junior Sarah Garcia was

named to the Southland Conference All-Academic Softball Team on Monday.

Garcia, a second team selection, was selected to the All-SLC third team

for hitting .276 with six doubles and 15 runs batted in while playing

center field for the Bears. The Sylmar, Calif., native recorded a 3.97

cumulative grade point average with a major in Family and Consumer


Garcia is the second UCA player to be named to the SLC All-Academic

Team. Janae Owens was named to the second team in 2008.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports

information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each

Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative

GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution

and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition to

qualify for the all-academic squad.
